Location: Colombo, Sri Lanka
Hashtag Generation is a non-profit organization committed to promoting civic engagement, digital rights, and fundamental freedoms in Sri Lanka. As a dynamic youth-led organization based in Colombo, we are seeking a dedicated Intern – Social Media Monitoring and Research to support our social media analysis-related work. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in monitoring social media data while contributing to our mission of promoting civic engagement and democratic transparency.
Position Overview:
As an Intern in the Social Media Analysis team, you will play a vital role in monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on social media content related to elections as well as broader political and civic developments. You will work closely with our team to identify and track harmful speech—in all three languages (Tamil, Sinhala and English)—and detect potential violations of election laws. Your contributions will help generate meaningful insights that support our efforts in promoting digital rights, civic education, and democratic engagement.
Key Responsibilities
01. Social Media Monitoring
- Tracking both election-related and broader political content across social media platforms, with a focus on identifying harmful speech and potential violations of election laws.
02. Data Collection & Organization
- Collect, organize, and document data systematically to ensure accuracy and support efficient reporting.
03. Real-Time Updates
- Share real-time updates on emerging social media trends and online campaign activity during the election period.
04. Analysis & Reporting
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of collected data and provide insights on trends, legal compliance, and civic impact.
05. Collaboration
- Work closely with fellow analysts and project leads to support broader civic education and democratic engagement goals.
Essential Qualifications & Skills:
- Proficient in written and oral communication skills in English and Sinhala & fluent in Tamil. (Trilingual)
- Current undergraduate or bachelor’s in Social Sciences, Law, Public Policy, International Relations, or related fields.
- Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize data and provide clear insights.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage large datasets and ensure accuracy.
- A strong interest in Sri Lankan politics, social media, and civic engagement.
- Knowledge of digital rights, civic engagement, and/or gender justice will be considered an added advantage.
